Translating Econometrics into Modern AI
Use familiar statistical objects as bridges, but do not confuse analogy with equivalence. For each concept, apply the five-question rule from Module 0: find the familiar object, what became learnable, the objective, the evidence, and the boundary of the analogy.
1. Translate a course object
Before revealing the worked example, try to name its familiar statistical bridge, what becomes learnable, the optimized objective, the evidence, and one reason the analogy could mislead you.
2. Separate the research question
3. Compare bridge strength
Some pairs are close mathematical translations; others only share a structural pattern. Cross-cutting methods should not be forced into one mathematical spine.
| Econometrics / statistics | AI / ML | Relationship | Shared idea |

4. Connect the bridge to what you will learn next
- Representation
- Features and internal states can themselves become learned quantities.
- Data
- Self-supervision can convert raw digital artifacts into large numbers of training targets.
- Computation
- Memory, latency, training time, numerical precision, and hardware can constrain the feasible model.
- Deployment
- An acting policy can change the future observations used for later learning and evaluation.
These are the bridges behind the two paths in the lesson: probabilistic/sequential structure and function approximation/representations. They overlap in reinforcement learning and AI agents.
